Every NFL team that could be in need of a new quarterback is keeping an eye on the situation in Houston this off-season, after it was reported that Deshaun Watson could be looking for a change of scenery. The Pro Bowl signal caller had to watch while his top wideout was being traded and reportedly had no say in the recent movement at the Houston Texans front office – including the ongoing search for coaching. Some see this situation between the Texans and Watson as unfeasible and that the quarterback will force his exit sooner or later. Where exactly would Watson like to play in 2021? A recent report revealed Watson’s “hierarchy” and his two main destinations are, in fact, in AFC East.
According to Armando Salguero of The Miami Herald, Watson prefers to play for the New York Jets, and his second option would be the Miami Dolphins. Salguero reports that Watson told people that the Jets are their preference because they recently hired Robert Saleh to be their new coach. Apparently, Watson valued Saleh so much that he wanted the Texans to interview him for his open coaching job.
The former San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator has established himself as one of the best in the league in recent years, and his defense even helped bring the 49ers to Super Bowl LIV last year. Saleh was loved by his players, and his charisma makes the Jets think he is able to quickly and efficiently establish a new culture based on success.
The Dolphins were the first team to be tied with Watson two weeks ago, but it is interesting that Watson would also be fine playing for Miami’s division rival. This is notable because if there is a proverbial arms race with recruitment choices for Watson’s services, the bet will be raised by two rivals fighting for him, with the loser knowing they will have to play against him twice a year.
