Greg Berlanti’s rookie DC Comics drama wins a quick retreat after it aired just one episode.
To no surprise, The CW is keeping Superman and Lois Lane close by.
The youngest broadcast network delivered a quick renewal of the second season for DC Comics’ debut drama Superman and Lois. The pickup arrives after the Greg Berlanti drama aired just one episode. The second installment opens on Tuesday night.
“The phenomenal multiplatform debut of Superman and Lois, which has worked for us on a large scale, both on a linear and streaming basis, is a testament to the creativity, hard work and dedication of the talented people who have worked tirelessly in front of and behind the camera, especially in this challenging environment, ” CW, Mark Pedowitz, said in announcing the renewal on Tuesday: “We are thrilled to now have two genuine new successes in Superman and Lois and walker, both renewed for the next season, along with 11 others from our programs, positioning us even more for continued strength and stability for the next season. “
Superman and Lois, starring Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch, he was picked up straight for the series on the CW. The network last year also went straight to the series walker while trying to make a leap in scripts before the stalemate between writers and their agents. Although Pedowitz firmly believes in the pilot process, the network went straight to the series this year with an update of The 4400 how The CW intends to make an initial leap in production during the pandemic.
The first 90-minute episode (which included a half-hour special following the premiere) drew 1.75 million viewers and a rating of 0.37 among adults aged 18 to 49. It scored the largest audience on the same day for any CW DC Comics fare since the huge crossover of Crisis on Infinite Earths in December 2019. The CW says it also delivered the largest streaming audience on day one for a new series in its history . The delay in showing saw the series debut grow to 2.7 million viewers in total.
With the renewal, CW continues to solidify DC Comics’ next wave of tariffs. The transmission network, a joint venture between Warner Bros. TV and CBS Studios, already picked up DC dramas produced by Berlanti Batwoman, The Flash and Legends of tomorrow. Both Black Lightning and Supergirl will end its races this season. Pedowitz is rejoining Berlanti for a planted episode of Black Lightning and waits for Ava DuVernay for her next DC entry, Naomi, who scored a pilot pickup earlier this season. (DC input produced by Berlanti Wonder Girl was passed over earlier this season, although the prolific producer managed to get a pilot for a live action Super powerful girls.)
The future of the new CW series has yet to be determined Kung Fu and Sarah’s Republic, which open in April and June, respectively.
