There is a new Supergirl in town. “The Young and the Restless” star Sasha Calle has been cast as the hero of DC Comics and will make her debut in the film “The Flash”.
Director Andy Muschietti confirmed the news on Instagram. In an emotional video, Calle finds out on camera that she got the part. “Little girl would be like, ‘No way,’” she says, through tears. “I probably won’t stop crying all day.”
The film, the first standalone Flash adventure after appearances in “Justice League” and “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, ”introduces Ezra Miller as the eponymous sprinter known as Barry Allen. The release of DC Extended Universe has been in development for some time, having suffered several setbacks since it was originally expected to hit theaters years ago. “The Flash” was further hit by the coronavirus pandemic, which forced the studio to postpone production. The film is scheduled to start shooting in 2021.
“The Flash” is scheduled to be released in theaters on November 4, 2022.
Muschietti reportedly auditioned over 400 actresses before casting Calle, the first Latina to play Supergirl. In the DC canon, several actresses wore red and blue Spandex, starting with Helen Slater in the Warner Bros. film. 1984, Laura Vandervoort on the CW series “Smallville” and, more recently, Melissa Benoist on the Warner Bros. “The Flash” will mark Calle’s first film role. She received a Daytime Emmy nomination last year for “The Young and the Restless”, in which she plays Lola Rosales.

Muschietti, best known for directing “It” and the sequel “It: Chapter Two”, embarked on the film after John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein and Rick Famuyiwa separated separately.
