Super Smash Bros. Ultimate balance changes tend to occur in waves. Whenever developers add new content to the game, players can expect to be greeted by a handful of character tweaks across the extensive list. But in the latest update, Nintendo decision makers focused on just one fighter: Wii Fit Trainer.

The only line in today’s version. Update 11.0.1 explains that “the vulnerability when landing after using the special Wii Fit Trainer Header has unwittingly decreased, so this has been adjusted.” Thus ends an exercise-based reign of terror that began earlier this month.

On March 4, the Wii Fit Trainer received what the community calls a “shadow buff”, or an improvement in its gameplay that was not mentioned in the official changelog, as part of the version. Update 11.0.0. While fixing a long-standing bug with the special Wii Fit Trainer Header, the developers have somehow reduced the landing motion recovery – or the amount of time between the end of the attack animation and the player being able to perform a follow-up action – in more than half.

This buff gave the popular movement even more use, especially when combined with the character’s special Deep Breathing to increase its fall speed. Under these circumstances, the Header became incredibly difficult for the opponent to punish, as the user was able to recover quickly after using it. The chandelier even opened up some new matching routes for players to learn.

As is often the case with these changes, users of the Wii Fit Trainer loved it, while other serious competitors hated it, but most of the time it did not affect the tournament results in the few weeks that it was in play or improved the fitness instructor’s rating in various classifications of power. With or without the chandelier of the shadows, the Wii Fit Trainer is still considered a firm fighter in the middle of the road, which is a shame as they are fun to watch in high level games.

I am very much in favor of letting things like this sway for a while before adjusting it with an update, even if it was really a mistake, but I think we have to respect the view of the developers here. I don’t think the Wii Fit Trainer was made to have all that power.
