There may be a fortune hidden in that dusty box of old video game cartridges.
An original edition of “Super Mario Bros.” The 1985 Nintendo Entertainment System was sold for an incredible $ 660,000 in Dallas on Friday, breaking the world record for a single video game sale, according to Heritage Auctions, which managed the transaction.
The Nintendo video game still closed is “the best copy known to have been professionally classified for auction,” the company said in a statement. The previous record for selling video games was a paltry $ 114,000, set last July.
The record cartridge was purchased as a Christmas gift in 1986, then placed in a drawer and forgotten for 35 years, before being found earlier this year.
The names of the seller and the buyer were not disclosed.
“[The video game] I’ve been at the bottom of my desk all the time, since the day I bought it, ”said the seller in the Heritage Auctions statement. “I never thought about that.”
