Professional Football Hall of Fame coach Tony Dungy joins the final episode of the “Ainsley Bible Study” at Fox Nation to discuss the Bible and use his position to help his players develop spiritually.
“As a Christian, do you really think God cares who wins the game?” Host Ainsley Earhardt asks Dungy, now an NFL analyst for NBC Sports.
“Absolutey,” replies Dungy, remembering having studied with a chaplain when he was a player in the Pittsburgh Steelers.
“[The chaplain] read 1 Corinthians, Chapter Nine, where Paul says, ‘Hey, in a race everybody runs, but only one wins the first prize, so run to win,’ “he added, referring to 1 Corinthians 9:24.” And that set me free. I never heard that before. “
In the next verse, Paul writes: “And every man who strives for dominance is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we, an incorruptible.”
“Make sure you are winning the race to heaven and spiritually, and not just these earthly races,” interpreted Dungy.
Dungy went 148-79 in the regular season and playoffs over 13 seasons as the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Indianapolis Colts. In 2006, Dungy took the Colts to their first Super Bowl championship since 1970, when the franchise was located in Baltimore.
According to Dungy, who was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2016, he told his players: “I want to help you be a better player. I want to help you improve your craft. But I will help you grow as men. , also.”
He said he was blessed with a platform that enables him to introduce Christ to more people.
“God has put us all in a position to influence someone,” said Dungy. “It can be a person, it can be more. But when you have that opportunity, you have to take advantage of it.”

He noted that fans often think of NFL players as “superhuman” and living the perfect life when that is not the case.
Dungy remembers celebrating with his Colts team after a victory during the 2006 championship season and receiving news that wide receiver Reggie Wayne’s brother had died in a car accident.
“You need more than just flattery from fans at that point, you need more than just a salary,” he said. “If you don’t have the Lord, it will be overwhelming.”
