R&B singer Jazmine Sullivan and country music star Eric Church sang the national anthem at the Super Bowl on Sunday. They were just part of the memorable and inclusive performances that preceded the game, which started with Alicia Keys singing “Lift Every Voice and Sing”.
HER followed Keys’ performance with a powerful interpretation of “America the Beautiful”. His performance was repeated by the interpreter ASL Warren “Wawa” Snipe. Snipe, a deaf rapper, received a lot of praise online for signing him during live performances at the stadium.
Just finished her spectacular reading at the Biden-Harris inauguration, award-winning poet Amanda Gorman recognized a nurse, an educator and a veteran of the Navy who served as the game’s honorable captains.
“We celebrate them by acting with courage and compassion,” read Gorman in his original poem. “Doing what is right and fair, because while we honor them today, they are the ones who honor us every day.”
With so many black women in pre-game performances, this was possibly the most inclusive Super Bowl of all time.
