At this week’s CES, Kensington revealed what appears to be one of the most attractive Apple accessories we’ve seen so far – the StudioDock for iPad Air and iPad Pro. The product aims to bring together a great deal of functionality with the aesthetics of the Pro Display stand. Apple XDR.
Kensington designed the StudioDock to work via a magnetic connection to the iPad Air 2020 and iPad Pro 2018 or later 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro – a good nod to the beloved functionality of the iPad’s magical keyboard. This connection works in portrait and landscape mode.
As mentioned above, the StudioDock has the same design as the Pro Display XDR stand, a minimalist aluminum pedestal and at the base of it, there are two built-in Qi wireless chargers (one up to 7.5W and the other up to 5W). Kensington will also sell an optional Apple Watch charger that will attack the StudioDock.
As for connectivity, the back of the StudioDock has 3 USB-A, Gigabit Ethernet and HDMI 2.0 ports. One side of the StudioDock has a USB-C port for charging 18W. The other side has 1 headphone port (3.5 mm) and a fast UHS-II SD card reader.
Kensington hasn’t shared specific pricing or availability details yet, but there’s a tip. In the middle of the product page, Kensington says the Apple Watch charging accessory will be “coming in mid-2021”. So, fingers crossed, StudioDock will arrive in the summer or maybe sooner.
You can learn more about StudioDock on the Kensington website here and also sign up to find out when it will be released – look for the “Be the first to know when StudioDock is available” links at the top and bottom of the home page).
We will also review the StudioDock as soon as we can get our hands on the new iPad accessory, so keep an eye out for that in the coming weeks.
