Steven Yeun, a graduate of Troy High School, is nominated for an Oscar for best actor

TROY, Mich. – Troy High School students and staff have something more to be proud of.

On Monday morning, one of the school’s former students was nominated for an Oscar for best actor.

Steven Yeun was nominated for best actor alongside Anthony Hopkins and Gary Oldman for their role in Minari.

It started right here at Metro Detroit.

Yeun attended school 20 years ago. The school’s teachers remember him as a great student and are thrilled to learn that he has achieved so much.

“Knowing he was nominated for an Oscar is, I’m getting goosebumps just thinking about it,” said Troy High School professor Rebecca Brewer.

She was Yeun’s former teacher and still has her picture from last year and the note he wrote on the back.

Now, more than two decades later, she still shares his photo and message with her current students.

Another school teacher, Dave Aldinger, described him as quiet, smart and smart. The teacher said that he knew that Yeun would accomplish great things.
