Steve Jobs’ handwritten employment form in 1973 is sold for GBP 162,000 at an auction

Steve Jobs’ 1973 handwritten employment form was sold at auction for GBP 162,000 (about Rs. 1.6 crores). The auction was conducted by Charterfields in the United Kingdom. The bidding started on February 24 and ended on March 24. The one-page handwritten job application is reportedly one of the first that Jobs submitted after leaving Reed College in Portland, Oregon, USA. This is not the first time that this job application has been sold for a lot of money at an auction, having been purchased by a technology entrepreneur in early 2018.

The job application is said to be one of the first submitted by Apple co-founder and former CEO Steve Jobs, a year before joining Atari in 1974, where he met his Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. Jobs and Wozniak opened Apple in 1976 with their first office installed in Jobs’ garage in Los Altos, California, USA. The app sees Jobs mentioning English Literature as his specialty, along with Calculator and Computer Design Technician as his skills.

Charterfields described the job application as:

  • An employment form signed on a single 1973 page is being offered for sale at auction.
  • In the questionnaire, Steve Jobs highlights his experience with “computers and calculators” and special skills in “electronic technology or design engineer – digital”.
  • The questionnaire is believed to have been completed by the time he left Reed College in Portland, Oregon.
  • A year later, he joined Atari as a technician, where he worked with Steve Wozniak before founding Apple in 1976.
  • The application is in very good condition, with some general creases, light stains and old adhesive tape on the top edge. It is accompanied by letters and certificates of authenticity.

Posthumously, Jobs’ memorabilia was sold for a lot of money as an autographed floppy disk and a Newsweek magazine was sold for $ 84,115 (about Rs. 60 lakhs) and $ 50,000 (about Rs. 35 lakhs), respectively.
