Mets owner Steve Cohen did not stop at his Twitter statement announcing the resignation of GM Jared Porter for allegedly sending an inappropriate stream of texts to a reporter in 2016.
Cohen elaborated on the social media platform on Tuesday, when a user asked him, “Digging to cancel the culture is awful, now that [Porter’s] life has been ruined, what is your path to redemption, Mr. Cohen? “
“I have no idea. I have an organization of 400 employees that is more important than anyone,” Cohen answered. “No action would be [have] set a bad example for the culture I’m trying to build. “
The previous Tuesday, Cohen announced his resignation via a tweet: “We fired Jared Porter this morning. In my initial press conference, I talked about the importance of integrity and I meant it. There must be zero tolerance for this type of behavior. “
Cohen handled his own “Me too” accusations at his Point72 Asset Management company before being approved as the new owner of Mets in October. Several former Connecticut-based hedge fund employees filed complaints of discrimination and misogyny last year with the state’s Human Rights and Opportunities Commission. These allegations raised concerns among some MLB owners when they approved Cohen’s $ 2.4 billion purchase of the franchise, the Post reported in August.
