Stephen Curry’s first name is Wardell. Don’t call him that

Stephen Curry looks very close to former Golden State Warriors beat writer Marcus Thompson.

Curry gave “unprecedented access” and granted “exclusive interviews” to Thompson when he was writing the biography of the NBA superstar, according to the back cover of “Golden: The Miraculous Rise of Steph Curry”.

But, apparently, they are not tight enough for Athletic’s columnist to refer to Curry by first name.

Yes, it is not Stephen. In fact, this is his middle name, although it is the name that everyone calls him.

Well, everyone except Thompson, on Thursday night after the Warriors’ 121-99 victory over the San Antonio Spurs. Before asking a question about Golden State striker Kelly Oubre’s ability to score on the shot, Thompson called Curry by the name “Wardell”.

The three-time NBA champion and two-time league MVP did not respond verbally to the name. But his look said it all.

Here’s that amazing look again, in a practical GIF format.

It was probably all good fun and Thompson had the reaction he expected from Curry.

The reporter did not reveal why he prefaced his question with that name. But he overturned the theory among Twitter users that he asked the question about Oubre just for the opportunity to use the name “Wardell”.

“I will accept your apologies when my story is released,” Thompson said to one of those people.
