Almost a week may have passed since the violent attack on the U.S. Capitol by supporters of Donald Trump, but January 6, 2020 will go down in history as a black day for Americans.
On Monday’s episode of The Late Show, host Stephen Colbert noted that the fatal Capitol incident, which left six dead, left him “more upset than he ever remembered”. Even more than 9/11, he added.
“[9/11] it’s the most horrible day in American history, but I want to point out that no American was rooting for terrorists at that time, ”he said. “Nobody was making excuses for the terrorists, nobody was pretending that they weren’t terrorists.”
During his opening monologue, Colbert added that, after further investigation, the violent attack on the Capitol was fully planned. In addition to Trump setting a date and place for supporters to meet, the dawn host said the protesters gathered materials for what could have been a more deadly incident – including two bombs found outside the DNC and RNC buildings, and a truck containing eleven molotov cocktails.

“This was a coordinated and planned attempt to terrorize, if not kill, our nation’s elected leaders,” said Colbert of the “local terrorists in a jughead jihad” who attacked the Capitol on Wednesday.
Shortly after the news of the circular attack across the country, and even around the world, talking about impeachment and the invocation of the 25th amendment also came into the conversation. Removing Trump, however, is “the least we should expect from our elected leaders,” said Seth Meyers on Monday.
“[Trump’s removal] it is an urgent matter of national security and the minimum necessary for the preservation of our democracy in ruins ”, said the night presenter during his segment“ A Closer Look ”.
While Democrats and other elected officials are looking for ways to remove Trump from office, notable Republican Party figures, including Kevin McCarthy and Roy Blunt, say impeachment and premature removal could further divide the country. However, it is the same elected officials who also called for unity after Wednesday’s violent incident.
For appeals by unit employees who disagree with Trump’s removal from office, Meyers asks, “How can we seek unity with people who want a confederation?”
