Steph Curry leads the NBA in wins over substitution, defending the first MVP

In order for the Warriors to fight for a playoff spot this season without Klay Thompson, it was believed that an MVP-type campaign would be required of Steph Curry. Well, it’s obviously still very early, but so far, Curry has done just that.

His 62-point game, the best of his career, in the Golden State’s 137-122 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday is the most impressive individual performance of any player in the league so far. He followed up with another 30 points and almost triple-doubled in 31 minutes in the 137-106 burst victory over the Sacramento Kings on Monday, and almost got rid of the hole he created with an unusually bad start to the season.

In seven games, Curry now averages 32.0 points, 6.4 assists and 5.3 rebounds per contest with 46.3% of field shots, 36.9% of 3 points and 98.2% of the line free throw. His regression to the average should only continue, which means that another season 50/40/90 appears within the realm of possibility.

That would certainly be a strong footnote in Curry’s potential MVP candidacy. Leading the NBA in wins over the substitute player (WARP) would be an even stronger argument, which is exactly what he has done so far.

The names featured on that list are some of the best players on the planet, and it certainly wouldn’t be surprising if one of them were named NBA 2020-21 MVP. However, there is only one name at the top, Curry.

He and the Warriors are about 10 percent of the way in the regular season. Obviously, there’s a long way to go, but the twice NBA MVP may have to create a little more space on your trophy rack.
