Steelers talking to Mike Sullivan about his position as a QB coach

No, he is not switching from hockey to football.

After the Steelers announced the hiring of Matt Canada as their offensive coordinator for the 2021 season, reports have emerged that, unlike the last time they hired an offensive coordinator who was previously their coach, the Steelers would be looking to replace the Canada’s role in 2020 coaching staff. According to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Steelers are talking to former Giants quarterback coach and offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan about their open position.

Sullivan started his coaching career in the NFL in 2002, after jumping from his university career, where he spent his entire career in defending the ball. The Jacksonville Jaguars defensive quality control coordinator in 2002, Sullivan moved to the other side of the scrimmage line in 2003 as an offensive assistant. Sullivan spent six years coaching the New York Giants wide receivers before switching to the quarterback coach for two seasons in 2010 and 2011.

After two Super Bowls with the Giants, Sullivan was hired as the offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for two seasons before returning to New York as a defender coach in 2015. Sullivan was promoted to the Giants offensive coordinator for 2016 and 2017 seasons before go to Denver as a quarterback coach in 2018.

Sullivan spent the last season as administrator of the Army, his alma mater, where he was director of recruitment.

With no requirements for the NFL-defined interview process, Steelers can choose to interview multiple candidates or simply offer the position of defender coach to whomever they choose.
