We moderate comments. Our goal is to provide substantive comments to a general reader. When selecting submissions, we offer a space where readers can share intelligent and informed comments that increase the quality of our news and information.
Although most comments are posted if they are on the subject and not abusive, moderation decisions are subjective. We will do it as carefully and consistently as possible. Due to the volume of comments from readers, we are unable to review individual moderation decisions with readers.
We value thoughtful comments that represent a variety of viewpoints that present your views quickly and politely. We make an effort to protect discussions of repeated comments by the same reader or different readers
We follow the same taste patterns as the daily newspaper. Some things we do not tolerate: personal attacks, obscenity, vulgarity, profanity (including profanity and letters followed by dashes), commercial promotion, impersonation, inconsistency, proselytism and SCREAMS. Do not include URLs for websites.
We do not edit comments. They are approved or deleted. We reserve the right to edit a comment that is quoted or extracted from an article. In that case, we can correct the spelling and punctuation.
We accept strong and critical opinions about our work, but we don’t want comments to get bogged down in discussions about our policies and we will moderate accordingly.
We appreciate it when readers and people cited in articles or blog posts point out errors of fact or emphasis and investigate all claims. But these suggestions must be sent by email. To avoid distracting other readers, we will not post comments that suggest a correction. Instead, corrections will be made to a blog post or an article.
