On Wednesday, coach Mike Tomlin gave his season-ending press conference and was asked if there would be changes in his coaching staff this off-season.
“Moving is part of our business,” said Tomlin during his news conference. “I will recognize the possibility of this. We are just beginning the process of having those kinds of substantial discussions that usually produce change or not change. It is that time of year. I anticipate these discussions happening and happening as soon as I set a course to move forward.”
The Steelers wasted no time making decisions.
Earlier on Thursday, the team announced that offensive coordinator Randy Fichtner, offensive line manager Shaun Sarrett and defense coach Tom Bradley will not have their contracts renewed.
“I want to thank all three coaches for their commitment and dedication to the Pittsburgh Steelers,” said Tomlin in a statement on Thursday. “They all played vital roles in our success and I appreciate their efforts. Personally, Randy and I have been in Pittsburgh since I hired him in 2007, but our relationship started well before that. He has been a friend of mine for years and I wish his family nothing. beyond the best, and I am forever grateful for our relationship on and off the field. ”
Fichtner, who was hired in 2007, has spent the past three seasons as an offensive coordinator for Steelers. During two of these seasons (2018-19), he served as the offensive coordinator and coach of defenders, while he only occupied the role of offensive coordinator in 2020. Prior to that, he was the coach of defenders of the 2010-17 team and the 2007-09 receiver coach.
Sarrett joined the Steelers in 2012 and was an offensive assistant for six seasons, from 2012-17. In 2018 he was promoted to assistant coach of the offensive line. Sarrett was named coach of the team’s offensive line in 2019, a role he has played in the past two seasons.
Bradley joined the Steelers in 2018 as the team’s defense coach, a role he held for three seasons. Bradley joined the team after a career as a football coach at Penn State University.
