Steelers could lose another trainer, Teryl Austin interviews with Titans

Thursday, January 14 was a busy day for the Pittsburgh Steelers. After informing offensive coordinator Randy Fichtner, offensive coach Shaun Sarrett and secondary coach Tom Bradley that they will not be able to get new contracts with the team, the Steelers also learned of the retirement of veteran tight end coach James Daniel.

Now, the Steelers have to wait to see if any other coaches are looking for work elsewhere in 2021.

The Miami Dolphins are interviewing defender coach Matt Canada for his offensive coordinator position, and it now appears that Steelers defensive assistant coach Teryl Austin is having the opportunity to prove that he is capable of another defensive coordinator job with Tennessee Titans.

According to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:

Austin came to the Steelers after being the defensive coordinator for Cincinnati Bengals, and he thrived in Pittsburgh by reviving the team’s secondary. If Austin gets a job offer in Nashville, you can’t blame him for taking it, considering there are rumors that the Steelers are keeping Keith Butler year after year.

If Canada and Austin left for greener pastures in 2021, the Steelers would have an incredible turnover of coaches towards the new year of the league. Again, these are just interviews that Canada and Austin are participating in, but 6 new coaches would have to be hired if they wanted to get their promotions in other jobs.

As Thursday showed, business with Steelers is increasing in this off-season and, to stay on top of the news, stay tuned to BTSC.
