Steelers builds QB franchise in new NFL Network simulated project

It is absolutely not out of the question for the Pittsburgh Steelers to select a quarterback at the start of the 2021 draft of the NFL. Despite reports that Ben Roethlisberger will return to the team this season, the board acknowledges that there needs to be a plan for his successor.

But former NFL general manager and current NFL Network analyst Charlie Casserly is only raising Steeler Nation’s hopes with his new mock one-round draft.

Casserly has four quarterbacks coming off the board in the first round, which is quite common among NFL draft experts. He also made the Steelers select the fourth quarterback with the 24th overall choice. The spoiler here is that Casserly has former Ohio state quarterback Justin Fields falling for that choice.

Even though the Steelers and Ben Roethlisberger plan to continue their partnership, I don’t see the veteran playing for much longer. In a surprising turn of events, Fields slides all the way to No. 24 (obviously, it won’t be a surprise if he’s long before that) and Pittsburgh takes a chance on getting a talented successor to Big Ben. Sitting behind a future Hall of Fame for a year is a prime spot for the Ohio state perspective.

This kind of scenario is a complete illusion. I will not exclude Fields from being the third or even fourth quarterback on the board, considering how different the two potential customers are. There are certainly teams where Fields is not the most suitable scheme. That said, if Fields falls out of the Top 10, there will be many teams looking to go up and catch him and Pittsburgh could be one of them.
