Work at home and job losses caused by the Covid-19 pandemic led many Americans to pack up and move to other states in 2020.
Those who rented unilateral U-Hauls went to states like Tennessee, Texas, Florida and Ohio, according to a new company report.
U-Haul’s annual migration trend report calculates how many one-way U-Haul vehicles enter a state versus how many leave each calendar year. For the 2020 report, data has been compiled on more than 2 million transactions from unilateral U-Haul rental customers.
In 2020, Tennessee won first place for the most U-Haul arrivals versus departures for the first time. Arrivals accounted for 50.6% of all U-Haul traffic in Tennessee, according to U-Haul, an increase of 12% over last year. Meanwhile, exits increased by only 9% compared to 2019.
Florida, which ranked first in 2019, ranked third.
Texas, which ranks among the top two states with the highest number of one-way arrivals since 2015, ranked second in 2020. Florida, which ranked first in 2019, dropped to third place.
California ranks last on the 2020 list, behind Illinois and New Jersey, as the states with the least one-way arrivals. California has been in the top three states since 2016 and Illinois has been in the bottom two since 2015, when U-Haul started ranking states.
“I’m seeing a lot of people in California move [to Tennessee] because they are attracted to our lifestyle, “said Jeff Porter, president of the U-Haul Company of Nashville in a statement. Tennessee also has no income tax, has many jobs and is business-friendly, said Porter.
