Approximately 2,970 small businesses and nonprofits in South Carolina will begin receiving $ 65 million in emergency grants starting in January, according to an announcement made on Thursday.
The grants are being distributed as part of two programs that were established by the SC Legislature earlier this year to help businesses and nonprofits that have been hurt by the coronavirus pandemic.
The money for these initiatives, known as the Minority and Small Business Relief Grant Program or Nonprofit Relief Grant Program, was provided by the federal government as part of a $ 1.9 billion payment that Congress gave South Carolina in March.
Small businesses and nonprofits that have been accepted into these programs will see their funding come sometime in January. This time was the result of some delays in processing the large number of requests that were received by the SC Administration Department.
Subsidies for small and minority companies have been limited to $ 25,000, and funding for nonprofit organizations in the state was limited to $ 50,000.
In total, some 2,284 companies will share the $ 40 million state legislators reserved for small businesses. And another 686 nonprofit organizations will share the $ 25 million that the Legislature has dedicated to them.
The list of small eligible companies includes bars, gyms, nail salons, pizzerias, coach tourism companies, tent rental companies and even web development companies.
Meanwhile, non-profit organizations include churches, charities, art museums, youth groups and centers for domestic violence.
