Star Wars Battlefront 2 is next week’s Epic Store gift • Eurogamer.net

And Crying Suns is free now.

Weekly video game giveaways from the Epic Store keep coming, and the next is DICE’s space shooter, Star Wars Battlefront 2, which will be free to download starting on Thursday, January 14th.

The highly anticipated launch of Star Wars Battlefront 2 in 2017 was, of course, forever tarnished by the controversy surrounding its pay-to-win monetization and loot box systems – both criticized so vehemently that the publisher EA and DICE finally reversed the course, dramatically reworking the game system progression and switching to cosmetic-only microtransactions.

With these changes completed, it was much easier to appreciate the strengths of the DICE sniper, who, as Martin Robinson of Eurogamer pointed out in his initial analysis, was always capable of some genuinely stunning moments of action, despite his unnecessary confusion. “When it fits … there’s nothing like it,” he wrote, “and all the drama and dubious decisions made elsewhere shouldn’t eclipse DICE’s often incredible achievements.”

The developer continued to build on the solid, albeit somewhat confusing, core of Battlefront 2 in the years that followed – adding new maps and multiplayer modes and finally delivering a decently enjoyable Star Wars prank, despite its disastrous release.

The Epic freebie – the Celebration Edition of Battlefront 2 – features all post-launch additions, as well as all cosmetic content previously available as in-game purchases, up to and including those released as part of the Rise of Skywalker game update.

Players will be able to add the Celebration Edition of Star War Battlefront 2 to their Epic Store libraries at no charge for a week starting next Thursday, January 14th. Before that, Crying Suns-like tactical sci-fi can be downloaded for free from the store.
