Star Trek Legends, recently launchedsed at Apple Arcade, plays a lot like Galaxy of Star Wars heroes, Disney’s Sorcerer’s Arena, DC Legends and countless others Turn-based mobile RPGs. But without irritating energy meters or microtransactions. As a result, looks like one games and not a mat designed to take you to a store.

Star Trek Legends involves a large cast of characters, good and bad, from various Star Trek shows. As they are all going out and fighting each other? The Nexus, that great energy tape thing Generations, is back and Starfleet has a new special ship designed to enter. It’s a slightly fragile and undulating way to set up the game’s narrative, but it works.

And once you’re on the Nexus, interacting with other characters, the game takes great advantage of this setting. If you like Star Trek, what you’ll probably do if you’re reading this post so far, there are tons of jokes and references that will make you say “Ah, yes… I know that”. None of the stories in Subtitles they are masterpieces, but they tend to have some well-written dialogue sections with characters interacting with each other in fun and authentic ways.

The gameplay is quite normal for this type of game. You have a small team of characters, each with their own abilities and skills. You take this team on missions, which are made up of combat segments, short scenes and even a few moments when you have to decide what to do next. The combat is, again, nothing incredibly fresh or new, but it works. You attack enemies, taking turns back and forth until a team is on its feet. Fortunately, you can speed up animations during combat. They look good, but eventually I just want to kill the bad guys and move on.

What really elevates Star Trek Legends, I am writing this blog because the entire game is free in MTX or in paid coins. There is no way to spend money on this game. There are also no ads. This is standard for Apple Arcade releases, but it really makes this type of game a lot more fun to play. I still play Star Wars Heroes Galaxy, but every month it feels like something new has been added, designed to make me work for months or spend a lot of money. And with energy meters, it quickly becomes difficult to play the game, unless you pay cash. Or wait.

At the Subtitleshowever, you you can just … play the game. Unlocking characters is fun, not an expensive task. Completing missions is exciting, not a chore.

I can’t explain enough how strange it is, after years of playing this type of RPG for mobile devices, to be free to play it as much as I want. It’s cool. More the game it’s a lovely-looking celebration of Star Trek, old and new. It is a game made specifically for me. This makes me happy.

Yes I know. It’s on Apple Arcade. And yes, I know it means you or someone people you know cannot play. Which sucks! I think Star Trek Legends it’s good enough that I would love to see it transport to other platforms. But only if it removes the nonsense of mobile RPG.
