It is not always that an automaker claims that it just broke the record for the fastest production car in the world. But when the internet calls BS on that disk and the car has to try again, twice, then you really sit down and pay attention.
This is the saga of the $ 1.6 million Tuatara supercar from automaker SSC North America. The car’s first record of 316 mph was short-lived; he was almost immediately questioned by Internet detectives, to the point where the SSC was forced to review its video images and GPS data, find discrepancies and promise to try to set the record again.
It wasn’t until the company’s third attempt that it finally set the record at 282.9 mph, although that was nowhere near the 316 mph claim it made the first time.
