Sri Lankan beauty contest winner suffers head injuries during hand-to-hand combat

It was not exactly the coronation she was looking for.

A beauty queen competitor won the title of Mrs Sri Lanka over the weekend – only to end up in the hospital with head injuries after Mrs World took off her crown in a burst to award her to runner-up.

The terrible confusion on stage broke out moments after winner Pushpika De Silva received the title at a Colombo theater on Sunday night, according to Time 24 News.

Ms. World Caroline Jurie, who is from Sri Lanka and was at the event, suddenly jumped on stage and grabbed the microphone, claiming that De Silva was actually divorced and therefore disqualified from holding the title.

“There is a rule that prevents women who have already been married and divorced, so I am taking steps to make the crown second,” Jurie told the stunned crowd.

Jurie then tore the golden crown from De Silva’s head and placed it in second place, causing tears and chaos, the media said.

De Silva had to be hospitalized for head injuries caused by the tearing off of his crown, as well as trauma, Time24 said, citing a local newspaper.

The competitor later posted a picture of her on a hospital bed on her Facebook page – while denying that she was divorced.

“The pain in my skull when my crown was pulled out of my head by the married beauty queen of the world, the pain I felt when I lost the crown … ”, wrote De Silva.

“I say that a true queen is not a woman who snatches another woman’s crown, but a woman who [helps straighten] another woman’s crown !!

“I know that you are waiting for my response to the unexpected incident that happened. Although I have a lot to say, I will post only the essentials here, ” said De Silva.

She acknowledged that she and her husband live apart, but insisted, “I am not a divorced woman.”

Since then, she has been formally declared the winner, according to Newsfirst.
