Squad members prematurely call for Georgia’s second round: ‘We took Mitch out’

While votes in the Georgia Senate’s second special round continued to be counted until Wednesday morning, three members of the progressive “Squadron” in Congress seemed to be calling for disputes before the final numbers were counted.

“For every organizer, volunteer, campaign team, donor and cheerleader who’s crying with joy, we see you and thank you! Rest, you earned it,” Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., Tweeted before midnight ET with both Georgia races still tight and not called up.

A little earlier, Congressman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D, NY, tweeted: “Thank an organizer.”

“We got Mitch out of the way,” tweeted Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., Prematurely, reflecting the fact that Democrats would have a small majority (50-50 with Vice President-elect Kamala Harris breaking ties) in the Senate if they go both runs. (Two senators are actually independents who agree with Democrats.)

Stacey Abrams, a progressive Georgia election activist and former government candidate, who was widely credited by Democrats for helping Joe Biden win the state in November, did not go as far as members of the Squad.

“With new votes joining the count, we are on a strong path,” wrote Abrams on Wednesday. “But even as we wait for more, we will celebrate the extraordinary organizers, volunteers, canvassers and tireless groups that have not stopped going since November. Across our state, we roared. A few kilometers to go … but very well!”

The races, both complicated, kept going back and forth and were too close to happen as of midnight ET on Wednesday.

The Republicans Georgia Sens. David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler faced Democrats Jon Ossoff and Reverend Raphael Warnock in Tuesday’s second round, which was demanded after neither candidate received more than 50% of the vote on November 3.
