The Miami Beach City Commission extended an emergency order declaring the curfew starting at 8 pm Brasília time, from Thursday to Sunday, until at least March 30.
The commission said that Mayor Raul Águila will have the option to extend two additional one-week increments until April 13, if necessary.
The sidewalks will be closed during those days, from 10 pm to 6 am, for people who are not employees, residents or hotel guests, the commission agreed. Residents will have an exclusive banner to go back and move on.
Ocean Avenue will also be closed to pedestrian and vehicle traffic from 8:00 pm to 6:00 am, except for city residents who need access to the road, guests of hotels on Ocean Ave and employees.
Restaurants in the high-impact area will be able to continue to provide delivery service.
Águila will have the power to close other public roads as necessary or to impose a curfew, if necessary.
All sidewalk cafe operations need to be suspended within the high impact zone from 7:00 pm to 6:00 am ET and will need to remove their chairs and street furniture at 8:00 pm ET every night.
“The goal here is really to contain the overwhelming crowd of visitors, and the potential to halt violence and damage and damage to property, whether intentional or not,” said Aguila. “Unfortunately, this is the last thing I wanted to do. But this is a spring holiday like no other. As you said, these are not your typical breakers and it is a concentrated area.
“Not all people who visit Miami Beach are bad, they come to Miami Beach with the intention of breaking the law and damaging our quality of life. But this is a different situation and requires drastic measures ”, added Aguila.
