The Spotify desktop app was the company’s first portal on its music service before the mobile phone was taken over, but Spotify said the design of the desktop has not kept pace with the changes over the years.

Spotify updated the appearance of the desktop app and web player for its music streaming service, the company said on Thursday, including the ability to download tracks to a computer with its desktop app for people who pay premium members.

It has also made the design of its web player and desktop app more similar to that of its mobile app, so that the use of Spotify on all platforms is more cohesive, Spotify said in a blog post. And Spotify simplified the creation of playlists and added more controls for web or desktop users, such as the ability to write descriptions, upload images and drag and drop tracks into existing playlists.

“We are constantly testing, developing and launching new features,” said Spotify. “However, along the way, we felt that our experience with desktop applications had not continued and that it was time for a change.”

Spotify also added new keyboard shortcuts to assist with many other tasks, the company said. In the desktop application, can PC users press Control +? What about Mac users, Command +? – this will bring up a complete list of all available commands.

The news came about a month after Spotify held an event to reveal a list of ads, including plans to launch a new subscription level called HiFi for high-quality audio later this year and an expansion to more than 80 new countries. At the time, the music streaming giant also unveiled podcast exclusives and a set of new tools for artists and podcasters.

Spotify is the largest music streaming service for listeners and subscribers in the world.
