In the past, if I needed to use Street View, I usually tried to jump on my desktop. Although the Street View function on Google Maps on Android worked, it used to be confusing to use, simply because I couldn’t see where I was going. Google has finally added a split view mode for Street View on Android, making the feature much easier to use.

To use the split-screen view, just tap the Street View window when you find the correct location on Google Maps and then tap the circular expand / condense button that will appear in the bottom right corner of Street View. As soon as the split view is open, you will see where you are on the map, as well as the direction you are facing. It works in the landscape, as you can see in the hero image, although the portrait orientation seems more intuitive here. Also, look at the placemarks in Street View, although they are not new.

What Street View looked like on Android

We are seeing this new view in Maps v10.59.1, which you can download from APK Mirror here, and the split screen view appears to be active for everyone. The two screenshots above show the old UI in v10.43.7; you can see the distinct lack of an expand / condense button for the split view into those. Google took a while to implement this, but we’re happy to finally be here.
