LOS ANGELES (AP) – Spike Lee’s daughter and son were chosen as Golden Globe ambassadors to help with the awards ceremony.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced Tuesday morning that Satchel and Jackson Lee will assume the roles of ambassadors for the 78th annual Golden Globe Awards in February.
Satchel, 26, and Jackson, 23, are the first black brothers to take office. Jackson is the first black ambassador.
Both credited his maturity to his filmmaker father and mother, Tonya Lewis Lee, who is a film and television producer.
“We are proud to carry on our father’s storytelling legacy to draw attention to communities close to our hearts,” said Satchel Lee, who was the creative director of DRØME, a queer and intersectional art and culture magazine.
Satchel chose to partner with Callen-Lorde, an organization that helps LGBTQIA + communities with healthcare in New York City. Jackson is partnering with Big Brothers Big Sisters, the mentoring network supported by volunteers.
“As a visionary creative, my father taught Satchel and me the importance of entertainment as a cultural catalyst for change,” he said.
Callen-Lorde and Big Brothers Big Sisters will each receive a $ 25,000 HFPA grant made in Lee’s name.
Satchel said that selecting Callen-Lorde and the organization’s health initiatives was important for her “supporting the LGBT + community, because that is my community. Everything I do is just to give back to the people and communities that have given me so much. ”
Jackson said he chose Big Brothers Big Sisters in an effort to guide those in the same way that his father did.
“Having my father as a mentor changed my life,” he said. “Being able to give the opportunity to someone else and someone younger than me is kind of paying forward. It seems like a duty that I have to fulfill ”.
An ambassador is traditionally the son of a celebrity who assists in award presentations, distributing trophies to winners and accompanying them offstage.
Previous ambassadors include the sons of Pierce Brosnan, Dylan and Paris Brosnan, the daughter of Idris Elba, Isan Elba, and the daughter of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Simone Garcia.
The Golden Globes ceremony will be held on February 28 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. The show honors achievements in film and television.
