And the Ford Maverick plot is complicated.

In the past few weeks, we’ve seen the future Ford Maverick 2022 on public roads in much more detail. This usually sends a loud and clear signal: the official debut is coming. Now, a TFLtruck reader has sent these photos from San Diego, illustrating an interesting scene. You have probably seen a lot of commercials from manufacturers – especially Ford, as they have been prolific in their revelations lately – and that may well be what is happening in these photos.

So, if you see an ad with a blue Ford Maverick roaming the streets of California, remember this: you saw it here first.

Apart from the scene it is in, unfortunately there is not much more that we can gather in terms of useful information about the truck. Spy photos we posted last week show the tiny Ford truck from the front, in profile and from behind, as well as more hints about what’s underneath. These photos lose their camouflage, so we can I get a better idea of the style of the truck, at least from the side.

The body wheel arches and the front bumper (in place of the black lining on the entire truck) show that this can be a First Edition Maverick or at least a superior Lariat model. That’s just a guess, mostly based on how Ford treats the rest of its trucks. It looks like Ford will use a finish emblem layout similar to the Ranger and F-Series, although the photos we received do not show enough detail to distinguish what it says on the bumper. Update: We received another photo (above), and although it is still a little confused, it shows more details than the others.

Since this appears to be a top-of-the-line model – and automakers tend to show their best-equipped models in advertisements – this Maverick is expected to pack a 2.0-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost engine with around 245 horsepower. As far as we know, the 2022 Ford Maverick will share platforms and engines identical to the Ford Escape crossover and, most notably, the new Bronco Sport. Since the application is a little different here, however, I wouldn’t be surprised if Ford tweaked the engine a little differently, perhaps for better low-load torque. A 1.5-liter, three-cylinder EcoBoost may also be available for entry models (XL or XLT equivalent).

Fortunately, with the evidence that Ford is probably recording commercials for the truck, we won’t have to wait much longer. The company’s new mini-truck is expected to arrive in the coming months.
