Spiders mass exodus amid major floods in Australia

Spiders are making a massive exodus amid widespread flooding in southeastern Australia.

Heavy rains last week forced thousands of people to leave their homes in New South Wales, with hundreds more being rescued from the flood, officials said on Monday.

But people are not the only ones fleeing from the floods – swarms of creatures are also trying to reach the mainland, according to videos and photos posted on social networks.

Melanie Williams, from NSW city of Macksville, posted a clip on Facebook on Saturday showing hundreds of arachnids crawling on her garage door.

“Soooo many SPIDERS from the floods,” she wrote.

Another video, posted by TikTok user Shenea Varley over the weekend, showed spiders clinging to a fence as they struggled to escape the floods that fell below.

“There were also lizards, ants, basically all insects, crickets – all just trying to escape the floodwaters,” Varley told The Guardian Australia after a visit to western Sydney.

“My husband filmed it, because I wasn’t getting close,” she added. “When he was standing, he had spiders crawling up his legs.”

Matt Lovenfosse, a resident of Kinchela Creek, told CNN on Tuesday that the rain was still falling and that the floods were approaching his family’s home.

“It must be in the morning and the spiders will be all over the house,” he told the outlet, adding, “the trees are full of snakes.”
