Several hundred thousand Spectrum customers in Maine and New Hampshire lost internet and other services for about two hours on Monday night because of fiber breaks, the company said.
Internet, cable and telephone services fell around 6 pm, the company said, and service was restored around 8 pm. Spectrum has more than 440,000 residential and commercial customers in Maine, and all have been affected, said a company spokesman.
The problems started at 6 pm, when customers started losing their Internet connections.
“We are aware of an issue affecting services right now for Spectrum customers in Maine,” tweeted Spectrum just before 6pm. “We are working diligently to restore your service as quickly as possible and we apologize for any inconvenience. Thanks for your patience.”
A company spokesman said fiber breaks caused the outage.

“We identified two separate fiber breaks in our network, impacting services for Spectrum customers in Maine and New Hampshire,” said Heidi Vandenbrouck in an email late on Monday. “These separate outages impacted our redundant path, which normally serves as a backup, when a breakdown or damage occurs in part of the network.”
Among other impacts, the strike forced the postponement of a virtual Portland City Council meeting until April 12.
Vandenbrouck later said that service to Maine and New Hampshire was redirected to reconnect customers as quickly as possible, but workers were still making repairs to the outages that caused the disruption.
Meanwhile, Spectrum customers have accessed the company’s Ask Spectrum platform, a virtual account that can answer questions about services, products and individual accounts, to raise their complaints and concerns.
“National championship game at 9:20 pm, you’re on the clock,” wrote one subscriber, referring to the NCAA championship basketball game between Gonzaga and Baylor.
“My life has lost all meaning. What is the goal of continuing? ”Another joked.
“So many students who won’t be doing their homework tonight. They can thank Spectrum! ”Added an observer subscriber.
Spectrum offers cable television, Internet and telephone service to customers in Maine and across the country.
