South Korea’s first transgender soldier found dead

Byun Hui-su, 23, who was a sergeant before being discharged after being operated on in Thailand during a leave of absence, was found by emergency officers at his home in the city of Cheongju, south of Seoul.

There was no immediate word on the cause of his death.

A local counseling center, where Byun was registered, informed the emergency authorities that she has not been able to be contacted since February 28, the local fire department said.

Cheongju police confirmed that the corpse he found at Byun’s home on Wednesday was the ex-soldier. Authorities said it looked like she had been dead for a few days.

Byun, who had expressed hope of continuing to serve in the military’s female corps, was suing a lawsuit contesting his resignation, with a hearing scheduled for April, according to a spokeswoman for the military defense group Center for Military Human Rights of the Korea that worked with yours.
