South Carolina working to get tourism businesses back on track

COLOMBIA, SC (WRDW / WAGT) – Spring has arrived, and that means that we are one step closer to summer.

With more people being vaccinated against COVID-19, South Carolina officials are fighting for ways to boost tourism in the state.

Although the COVID figures for the state of Palmetto remain low, the unemployment rate in the tourism industry is still three times higher than that of the state as a whole.

The state Department of Health and Environmental Control says that there is an accumulation of people trying to get the vaccine since the beginning of Phase 1B. This is something that Governor Henry McMaster says you cannot avoid.

“We are vaccinating people. We are testing people. We are treating people and this build-up … we will always have one, but that is a good thing, ”said McMaster.

Health officials hope to take the state’s vaccine implementation to Phase 1C on April 12.
