South Carolina Senate adds firing squad as alternative execution method

The South Carolina Senate passed a bill on Tuesday that added a firing squad as an alternative method of execution for those facing the death penalty.

The Senate passed bill 32-11, adding the firing squad option to the electric chair in case an inmate chooses one instead of a lethal injection, The Associated Press reported.

Republicans and some Democrats voted to approve the bill. South Carolina has not carried out an execution in almost 10 years.

The state is currently unable to carry out executions because it does not have drugs for lethal injections.

With the new project, if the state has no means to carry out an execution by means of lethal injection, the prisoner will have to choose between the electric chair and the firing squad.

The Chamber is also studying a similar bill with the same execution option.

The legislation would likely pass if it reached Republican Governor Henry McMaster’s desk, as he supports the death penalty.

The Virginia Senate recently voted to abolish the death penalty in an action that was supported by Democrats in the state.
