South Carolina officials say a man was trying to enter prison

SPARTANBURG COUNTY, SC (WCSC) – A man was arrested after trying to break into a South Carolina prison with backpacks full of contraband, officials said.

South Carolina Department of Corrections officials announced the arrest of 19-year-old Nathaniel Jose Perez of Spartanburg, who was found bleeding from apparent fence cuts at the River Tyger Correctional Institution in Enoree on Wednesday.

Authorities said a large hole was made in the fence and some pieces of what appeared to be Perez’s clothing were found trapped there.

“Staff at the institution found Perez between an indoor and outdoor fence after being alerted to activities in the upper courtyard of the prison,” correctional officials said.

Perez was transported to a hospital where he was treated, released and transported to the Spartanburg County detention center. He is being accused of trespassing on a correctional facility, carrying marijuana with the intention of distributing and attempting to provide contraband to prisoners.

Officers reportedly confiscated four backpacks full of contraband, including marijuana, cell phones, tobacco, alcohol and other items.

An arrest warrant states that Perez admitted cutting the fence to enter the prison to deliver contraband to prisoners.
