South Carolina native to receive Trump’s medal of honor

WASHINGTON, DC (WIS) – A U.S. Army sergeant who grew up in the Midlands will receive President Donald Trump’s Medal of Honor.

Major Thomas Payne will be honored on September 11, according to White House officials.

Payne led an assault team in a building in Iraq and released 38 hostages. Shortly after doing this, Payne made his way to a second building, fought against enemy fighters and released 37 more hostages.

He also helped facilitate evacuation with the building’s hostages.

Payne grew up in Batesburg-Leesville and Lugoff, according to the White House announcement.

He is stationed in Fort Bragg, where he lives with his wife and three children.
