South Carolina Man Designs Inauguration Represents Black American Designers

COLOMBIA, SC – First Lady Michelle Obama and Vice President Kamala Harris drew attention at the 2021 presidential inauguration with their monochromatic looks designed by South Carolina native Sergio Hudson.

Hudson commends the Auntie Karen Foundation, located in Columbia, South Carolina, for its success in the fashion industry.

The Auntie Karen Foundation is a non-profit organization focused on creating and implementing community outreach programs to help empower, enlighten and educate others through the arts.

Hudson says he worked closely with the Harris team to create the sparkling tuxedo jacket and the dress she wore to wrap up the opening day.

Vice President Kamala Harris also represented two other black designers with the Pryer Moss coat she wore at the COVID-19 memorial and Christopher Rodgers’ all-purple outfit she wore to take office as vice president.

First lady Michelle Obama wore an all purple look at the inauguration also by Sergio Hudson, who gained great attention on social networks.

Hudson called the monochrome plum look ‘complete mood’ and thanked the stylist Michelle Obama, who complemented the look with an oversized gold belt, black leather gloves and Stuart Weitzman suede boots.

Sergio Hudson designs and produces luxury women’s clothing ready to wear in Los Angeles and, when designing these looks for the inauguration, gave voice to items by black American designers used by political leaders.

“I have African American daughters, so working on this project meant more to me than anything I’ve ever done,” Hudson expresses. “It made sense to what I do because sometimes when you are in fashion you are perceived as frivolous and that we really don’t bring anything to the world. So, when you have those moments to show like, ‘Look, we can be part of that too’ and to show my daughters that, because of this woman, her father participated in her celebration, it was incredible for me. “

The color purple not only represents majesty and is a tribute to the Women’s Suffrage Movement, but it also represents bipartisanship, for which President Biden promised to work by assuming the presidency in a tumultuous time for Democrats and Republicans.

Women’s Wear Daily officials say the choice to wear purple may also be representative of Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm, who was the first black woman elected to Congress and ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1972.
