The system will help DOT to make more informed decisions for security projects
South Carolina is implementing a new traffic safety system using accident data to improve the state’s road safety.
The state has 79,000 miles of highways and roads and in the next 26 months its Department of Transportation will develop, test and implement new technologies designed to reduce the number of traffic accidents.
High-risk areas
It will use a solution from the location intelligence provider Hexagon. Its geospatial division will use existing accident data from the South Carolina Department of Public Security to help security analysts and engineers identify high-risk areas. It will analyze accident rates, road characteristics and other data.
The system will also support the state’s Road Safety Improvement Program, supporting data collection and project identification. This will help to identify which transport security programs to finance.
Duncan Smith, state traffic safety engineer for the South Carolina Department of Transportation, said: “Hexagon’s security management system will give us a complete lifecycle approach to integrate, analyze and report data related to traffic collisions This will ensure that we have the appropriate data to make more informed decisions and propose the right countermeasures for security projects across the state. ”

Last month, Austrian public highway operator Asfinag launched a traffic management system that uses transmission technology to analyze road conditions. Information about congestion, accidents and road closures is then sent to drivers.
