The Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg, SC, was one of 16 hospitals to receive a disapproval note from the Leapfrog Group on its safety notes in the fall of 2020. The interim CEO of the hospital, Kirk Wilson, said that the Leapfrog Group’s ratings are becoming “increasingly irrelevant” according to The Times and Democrat.
The nonprofit organization Leapfrog Group releases hospital safety notes every fall and spring. Classifications are based on up to 27 quality measures, ranging from adherence to hand hygiene to surgical site infection rates.
Of the more than 2,600 hospitals evaluated, less than 1 percent achieved an “F” in the most recent evaluations. The Regional Medical Center was one of those hospitals. The autumn 2020 results show that the hospital underperformed 19 patient safety measures, according to the report.
Mr. Wilson says that Leapfrog’s degree of security is not the best indicator of service provided at RMC.
“What matters to us is how patients feel about us and how insurance companies see us and how CMS sees us,” said Wilson. The Times and Democrat. “This is what is important for our doctors and patients.”
Wilson said that Leapfrog’s grades are often based on the hospital’s participation in the research. “It is a very political organization and, frankly, it is not worth working with,” he said. The Times and Democrat.
Leapfrog Group President and CEO Leah Binder disputes Wilson’s claims.
“It is human nature when you get a bad grade to say that there is something wrong with the students,” she said in a statement to The Times and Democrat. “But the fact is that Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the gold standard for classifying hospital safety.
“The Regional Medical Center will be much more successful in improving patient care than trying to separate Leapfrog – the country’s most tested, validated and transparent hospital classification system.”
