South Carolina Governor’s wife Henry McMaster (R) Peggy McMaster tested positive for coronavirus on Friday, the governor’s office said this weekend.
The governor said his test was negative and his wife had no symptoms.
Both attended a Christmas party at the White House the night of the previous Monday, after a negative test for the virus earlier in the day. Brian Symmes, a spokesman for the governor’s office, said they both used “facial coverage when it was necessary and when social distance was not possible”.
“I am happy to say that Peggy is feeling well, has no symptoms at the moment and is in a good mood,” the governor said in a statement, according to The State. “This shows us, once again, how contagious this virus really is and how important it is to follow the advice and recommendations of our public health officials. We are working closely with SCDHEC [the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control] to ensure that we follow all recommended guidelines and that contacts close to Peggy are notified. “

The governor, who had events scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this week, will isolate for seven days, while his wife will be isolated for 10 days. Both will remain at the governor’s residence, but will isolate themselves as best they can, Symmes said, and the governor will work from home during quarantine.
Both are 73 years old, which makes them significantly more vulnerable to hospitalization.
