The governor of South Carolina took a victory lap after his fellow governors in Texas and Mississippi withdrew their mask mandates, publicizing the fact that his state never had such a mandate.
“Unlike Texas and Mississippi, we cannot suspend the mask’s mandate because we never had one,” tweeted Governor Henry McMaster.
“South Carolina took a measured approach and never closed. We gave Southern Carolians the freedom to choose for themselves what is best for their health and family, ”added McMaster, a Republican.

The governor included a video in his tweet, portraying several reports covering his decision not to issue a similarly masked mandate to other states.
“We never close,” said McMaster in the video. “Our reasonable steps of limited, measured and temporary actions have allowed us to fight the virus without harming our economy.”
McMaster’s victory post comes days after Texas and Mississippi announced they would be revoking mask terms and reopening their savings.
President Biden attacked the two governors after the announcement, saying that the governors ‘decisions to suspend the masks’ mandates were “Neanderthal thinking”.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki defended the president’s comment, saying the joke was a “reflection” of Biden’s “frustration and exasperation”.

The comments drew the ire of Republicans, however, with Senator Marco Rubio, R-Fla., Firing on Twitter that the president should “seek training for his unconscious prejudice” towards Neanderthals.
He also asked Biden to “apologize for his insensitive comments”.
“President Biden’s use of an old stereotype is detrimental to Europeans, Asians and modern Americans, who inherit about 2% of their genes from Neanderthal ancestors,” wrote Rubio, linked to an article in the tweet.
