On Thanksgiving Day, many families are sitting around the table thanking them for another successful year, but this year was different for the McKelvey family in Charleston, South Carolina.

At about 3:50 am on Thanksgiving, the Charleston police received a call about a victim with a gunshot wound at Pamilla Parkside apartments on Ashley River Road, South Carolina.

The person found lying in front of a car with a gunshot wound was Mikell McKelvey, a 15-year-old football player. Police officers tried to revive him, but he was pronounced dead at 4 am, according to a police report.

The video above is from West Ashley football coach Donnie Kiefer, who spoke about the talented McKelvey. McKelvey was a highlight on the junior varsity team that was drafted to the high school level as a sophomore.

McKelvey played linebacker and running back. Charleston police are investigating. Authorities have not named any suspects or released any further details about the shooting.
