South Carolina Face Jackets in Sweet 16 Sunday – Women’s Basketball – Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – Georgia Tech women’s basketball makes its second appearance on the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 on Sunday, facing South Carolina in the Hemisfair region. Yellow Jackets and Gamecocks start at 1 pm EST at Alamodome on ABC.

Sunday game: Georgia Tech and South Carolina meet for the first time in the show’s history on Sunday. The Yellow Jackets are making their second appearance on Sweet 16, while Gamecocks are making their 11th and are 4-6 of all time on Sweet 16.

Georgia Tech Update: The Yellow Jackets (17-8 overall, 12-6 ACC) secured their second appearance at the NCAA Sweet 16 Tournament, defeating West Virginia in the 73-56 runoff action. Three Yellow Jackets ended in double digits, with 22 points from Lotta-Maj Lahtinen, 21 points from Lorela Cubaj and 14 points from Kierra Fletcher. Cubaj scored his fourth consecutive double-double behind 12 rebounds, with the biggest increase in the game. The technology is 0-1 when competing in Sweet 16, having made its only appearance in 2012, dropping to No. 1 Baylor.

Georgia Tech NCAA tournament history: Georgia Tech’s 2021 spot at the NCAA Tournament marks the 10th appearance of the Yellow Jackets. The technology made its first appearance in 1993, but it would not return again until 2003. From 2007 to 2012, the jackets held six consecutive NCAA tournaments, highlighting the NCAA Sweet 16 program for the first time in 2012. Georgia Tech’s highest ranking in the NCAA tournament it was No. 4 in 2012.

The Jackets have won four games from the first round since 2007 and went 2-3 in the round of 16 entry into the tournament. At Tech’s last NCAA tournament in 2014, the Jackets dropped to LSU number 7 in the first round.

South Carolina Update: A No. 1 seed, South Carolina (24-4, 14-2 SEC) took down Mercer and Oregon State in the first two rounds to secure their seventh consecutive appearance on Sweet 16. The Gamecocks won a No. 1 seed for the fifth time in the past few seven tournaments and are guided by The Athletic National Player of the Year Aliyah Boston, averaging 19.4 points and 11.8 rebounds per game in the SEC Tournament and the NCAA Tournament combined.
