South Carolina defeats Delaware for first win of the season

ORANGEBURG, SC—Second quarterback redhirt Corey Fields connected 20 from 38 to 175 yards and a touchdown to take SC State to a 17-9 victory over Delaware State on Saturday (March 13º) at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium / Willie Jeffries Field.

Senior Tyrece Nick ended with six (6) receptions for 45 yards and a touchdown, while redshirt Shaquan Davis’ second year added five receptions for 52 yards in the win.

The Bulldogs jumped on the board first, a 1 yard punch from Kendrall Flowers at the 4:12 mark in the first quarter. The Hornets tied the game 7-7 after Jared Lewis’s 35-yard play for Bizzet Woodley early in the second quarter.

A Daniel Douglas sack at the 12:23 mark before the break pushed the lead 9-7.

Junior kicker Dillon Bredesen ended the first half connected in a 22-yard field goal to give the Bulldogs a 10-9 lead. Nick and the Bulldogs sealed the victory in a throw for Fields’ 11-yard touchdown with 3:19 remaining in the regulation.

Senior Chad Gilchrist led the defense with 10 tackles, while his teammates Darrell Brown and Shaheem Haltiwanger with 7 each.

SC State improved to 1-1 in the season, while Delaware State dropped to 1-1.
