On Wednesday night, Gamecock fans must have felt ecstatic.
The men’s team recovered after a tough loss to Auburn, closing Georgia. South Carolina stopped allowing 109 points for Tigers to almost cut it in half against Bulldogs, allowing 59 points.
You then look forward to the schedule and see two games that can be won by women and a clash against Vanderbilt to end this week’s games.
I am sure that many, like me, scored four victories for the USC, something that has been anything but a common occurrence in recent years.
At the right time, the men’s team decided to disappoint, giving 93 points to a team that had not yet won a game in the SEC.
This game proved once again, if you are a fan of Gamecocks, knowing how to deal with constant pain is a requirement.
But hey, at least the women went 2-0, winning both games 23 or more. They added yet another ranking victory to their already impressive resume!
It must be pretty obvious where I’m going (and not going) with these awards.
Come on!
Player of the week: Zia Cooke
During a week when Aliyah Boston was in trouble or didn’t look like her at all, Cooke was able to take the reins and lead the team to victory, twice.
Having been a little scared, she shook off the cold and started losing 19 and 21 points in her games last week.
She was also struggling to shoot from the city center, but hit 50% of the trios she tried in the last two games.
In a game against Alabama, where the team took some time to get into the rhythm, Cooke scored 12 of his 21 points, his team’s best mark, in the third quarter, where he regained the lead and never looked back.
She’s been fantastic offensively, especially when it mattered, and I just hope her stellar game continues for the rest of the season!
I’ll leave you with some highlights from the Mississippi state game.
Runner-up: Victaria Saxton
Saxton also did not disappoint this week!
In addition to putting double digits in both games this week, she also got her second double-double of the year and the first in conference games.
His defensive game continues to shine as well, winning three blocks in both games.
She may not be the player everyone talks about, but she has been one of the most valuable players on the team.
Honorable Mention: N / A
The women played very well, but nobody else stood out in both games.
As for the men, I was getting ready to write about Jermaine Couisnard and Keyshawn Bryant after they played quality games against Georgia, but how they played against Vanderbilt left a bad taste in my mouth, and I wasn’t going to forget just the second game.
Defensively, their defensive performance really amused me to see how easy it was for opposing players to simply get past them. If that weren’t enough, the Cocks also had a knack for getting players dirty after being defeated.
I cannot, in good conscience, praise any player of the male team after the last game.
