South Carolina coach Frank Martin will serve as chairman of the newly formed Racial Reconciliation Committee, created by the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

The committee will address issues related to racial injustice both in intercollegiate athletics and in society in general, according to a statement. It will also include other coaches and administrators.

The statement also said that the NABC board of directors distributed a list to all coaches who are members of the recommended initial action steps to help them become involved with their teams. The recommendations include five categories – team communication, student-athlete involvement, connection with internal and external leaders, becoming an advocate and commitment to learning.

“The NABC spends significant time on important issues in our sport, such as transfers and recruitment schedules, but they lose their importance for the racial conflicts that our country currently faces and the underlying issues that have brought us to this point”, president of NABC and Texas Christian University coach Jamie Dixon said in a statement.

“Our hope is that this committee and list of recommendations can leverage the platforms we have as coaches to help bring about the necessary changes.”
