South Carolina made a second successful foray in the past eight days on the current packed NCAA transfer portal, with the addition of a new cornerback on Thursday.

Former Georgia Southern redshirt freshman David Spaulding announced on social media that he would resume his career with Gamecocks. He played in high school at the Bradwell Institute in Hinesville, Georgia, where he was a teammate on USC’s prominent runner Kevin Harris.

Spaulding, six feet tall and 185 pounds, debuted as a Southern Georgia freshman before playing 54 snaps (out of 14 on special teams) in eight games this season. He posted seven tackles and returned his only 28-yard interception for a touchdown against the Appalachian State.

On December 31, Gamecocks also secured Georgia Tech’s former wide receiver Ahmarean Brown from the transfer portal.

New USC coach Shane Beamer has yet to announce a defensive coordinator or secondary coach as he tries to add depth to the squad, with the secondary being one of his biggest areas of focus. The Gamecocks lost five saves that started several games last season for several reasons, including two transfers.

Spaulding is the third defender to join the team since Beamer was hired. Former Woodruff and Georgia Army squadron Marcellas Dial signed his letter of intent on December 16. Isaiah Norris, former defender Isaiah Norris of TL Hanna, changed his alliance with South Carolina on December 25, after being verbally committed to Tennessee.
