Source – Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes to have surgery to fix his toe

KANSAS CITY, Missouri – Patrick Mahomes is scheduled for surgery on Wednesday because of the toe injury that bothered the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback at the end of the season and during the NFL playoffs, a source confirmed to ESPN.

Mahomes is likely to lose most of his off-season work with the team, but will be packed on the training ground, according to a source.

Mahomes had one of the worst statistical games of his career in the defeat of the Chiefs ’31 -9 in the Super Bowl LV to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He made 26 of 49 for 270 yards, zero touchdowns, two interceptions and a 52.3 pass rating. Kansas City has failed to score a touchdown for the first time since Mahomes started in 2018.

But, as he noted right after the game, he played well with the toe of the grass in the AFC Championship Game’s victory over Buffalo Bills.

“I can’t say that the toe was a problem when I played two weeks ago and played well on it,” he said. “Whenever you play football, you have to fight against injuries.”

The NFL Network first reported the surgery.
